I probably should have pulled Soto earlier, but the league rule is that starters have to pitch at least 5 innings (unless injured). I expected this to be an Opening Day pitcher's duel and Ron Darling did his part... Foster had a huge game for the Mets, even reaching second base on a Redus error then scoring in the Ninth Inning.

Philadelphia: Charles Hudson Cincinnati: Joe Price Philadelphia Wokenfuss 2-4 HR Run RBI 2 Strikeouts Schmidt 2-4 HR Run RBI 2 Strikeouts Hudson 1-3 HR Run RBI Hudson 9.0 IP 6 Hits 2 Runs 0 Walks 3 Strikeouts Cincinnati Concepcion 1-4 Run Esasky 1-4 Triple RBI Parker 2-4 Price 8.0 IP 7 Hits 4 Runs 3 HR 0 Walks 9 Strikeouts Final Score Philadelphia 4 (2-0-1) Cincinnati 2 (0-0-3) I did not expect much from these two starting pitchers. I thought it would be a hit-fest with each of them hitting the showers after the league mandatory 5.0 Innings Pitched. But - Hudson and Price battled. Zero Base on Balls on the day at all - 9 Strikeouts from Price - only 2 runs allowed by Hudson (and the last one was from a two-out triple in the bottom of the Ninth). This was a strong game, but totally enjoyable. Schmidt has a rough two-game series against the Braves before this and promptly struck out in his first two at-bats here. He warmed up with a single in the Sixth and then clouted his homer in the Eighth. The Phillies desperately need him to perform well to stay out of the basement. The Reds, well - they continued their offensive futility that plagued them versus the Mets. I have seen nothing in their lineups that give any glimmer of home. Eric Davis has been on the bench in their first three games and he may have to get in there before to long or the Reds will sink into oblivion. But - it’s only three games in. Maybe it’s too early to predict anything… |
