Scherrer's Defense Propels Eagles to 6-5 Win
Cincinatti (EP)
It's not often that a player's fielding prowess during a game can directly impact the game's results - Norfolk left fielder, Dave Scherrer, provided enough defense to inspire the Eagles for their next half-dozen games and Scherrer's defense carried the Eagles to a 6-5 win in Cincinatti.
Scherrer made not one, not two, not three but four outstanding catches in left field and added a blistering throw from the left field corner to shortstop Jeff Scott that was relayed to home plate to nail Reds centerfielder Jerry Hariston for the final out in the Fifth Inning and closed down a rally by the hometown team. Scherrer's speed and glove kept Cincinatti out of scoring chances all game long. Norfolk starting pitcher Luke Makarevich gave Scherrer a loud fist-pump in the Fourth Inning after Scherrer all but threw himself into The Great American Ballpark left field wall to catch a an arcing blast off of the bat of Adam Dunn.
Makarevich (1-0) went 6 innings, gave up 6 hits, 2 walks and three runs to earn his first win of the year. Marc Woodcock pitched the final .2 innings of the game to earn his first save of the season.
Eagles first baseman Harvey Williams went 3 for 4 in the game and drove in a run. Norfolk shortstop Jeff Scott had a 1 for 5 day at the plate, but drove in 2 runs with a home run in the Fourth Inning.
The RedsBronson Arroyo (0-1) was saddled with the loss, pitching 5 innings, giving up 8 hits and 5 runs (four of them earned).
Norfolk's season record rose to 2-1. Cincinatti's season record dropped to 1-2.

Cincinatti added an insurance run in the bottom of the Eighth Inning.
