Cubs GM Jim Hendry Let Go - August 21, 2011
The Cubs had to do something.
I don't know why they didn't start with trying to get rid of all those big contracts they have on the payroll at the trade deadline in July.
Something had to be done and someone was going to be let go from the Cubs - be it a player or two like Aramis Ramizez or Alphonso Soriano, just to name two of the players with some of the bigger contracts on the team. It seems the Cubs organization tabbed Hendry as the one to go instead.
I would have kept Derrek Lee, and not signed Carlos Pena to a 1-year 10 million dollar contract to take Lee's place at first base.
I would have kept Kouske Fukudome and instead would have traded Alphonso Soriano (who I do like) to move Tyler Colvin to left. Tony Campana could even play left field.
I like Aramis Ramirez, but his contract is huge. He is having a good year this year and he can be an anchor at third base with the youngsters Starlin Castro at shortstop and Darwin Barney at second base. Keeping Lee would have given the Cubs a solid infield.
I will say Pena is a very good defensive first baseman and he has begun hit this year. I think it's the $10,000,000 one-year salary that has me bothered. Hmm.
And the Cubs kept high-priced Soriano. Hmm.
And the Cubs are paying a lot of cash to pitcher Carlos Zambrano. Hmm.
I guess someone had to go -
