Pitchers and Catchers Report Series 2014

GAME ONE

In a pre-game roster move, Warm Springs, Oregon release pitcher Frank Tanana. Tanana did not meet the series' roster roll of demanding a $ salary. Tanana made no fuss about it, but said maybe he could hook on with the Warm Springs, Montana squad if the series returns next year.

WS Oregon inked J R Richard to a series contract and in a classy move, gave Richard the ball for Game One. WS Montana long-annointed Game One starter Rick Matula welcomed the challenge and smiled when he said, “This is going to be great for the fans. Let's play ball!”

Heavy PCR Series favorites, WS Oregon batted first and made it a splash almost immediately. Shortshop Davey Concepcion arced a double and two batter later Harmon Killibrew parked a moon shot of a homerun somewhere into the leftfield parking lot. WS Oregon quickly led 2-0.

WS Montana pitcher, Matula, settled down and held the WS Oregon bats quiet for the next three innings. In the bottom of the Fourth Inning Ivan Rodriguez and Larvell Blanks doubled and the Montana team tied the game at 2 runs a piece.

In the bottom of the Fifth Inning WS Montana firstbaseman, Eddie Murray, struck out by WS pitcher Richard in his first two at-bats, coaxed a walk from the fireballer and gave way to Al Simmons who rocked a Richard blazing fastball over the left-centerfield bleachers. Suddenly, the scrappy Montana squad was ahead of the Oregon team, 4-2. Richard then bore down and whiffed the next two Montana batters.

Sparked by a deficit going in to the top of the Sixth Inning, WS Oregon was jump-started again by Concepcion who again doubled. Third baseman Pete Rose then also doubled and before the inning was over four runs had crossed the plate. Oregon was back in the lead, 6-4.

Simmons drew a one-out walk from Richard in the Seventh. Rodriguez laced a double into the gap in right and with Simmons chugging all the way, Montana plated another run to bring the score to 6-5 at the end of seven innings.

Matula kept the vaunted Oregon bats quiet and Montana kept chipping away. Matual whiffed chasing a ghost of a pitch from Richard, but right fielder Rowland Office got just enough of a Richard pitch to get the ball over the wall in the rightfield corner. Just like that, the score was knotted at 6-6 at the end of the eighth inning.

Richard led off the Ninth Inning and chopped a single between Murray and second baseman Julio Cruz. Montana leftfielder Lou Brock bunted Richard over to second base. Concepcion then grounded out to Murray but Richard scooted over to third base. With two outs and Richard on third base, Oregon's Rose stepped to the plate and everyone in Surprise Park could see by the look on his face, Rose was all business. Three pitches into the at-bat, Rose got all of a Matula slider and deposited in the centerfield stands. WS Oregon led 8-6 halfway through the Ninth Inning.

Simmons led off the bottom of the Ninth Inning for WS Montana. The centerpiece of the Montana crew showed there was plenty of fight in him as he blasted another Richard offering into the distant parking lot. The score was quickly 8-7 and Montana had 3 outs still left to give.

Rodriguez flew out to shallow centerfield.
Centerfielder Brad Asselstine stroked a single.
Cruz then walked.
Blanks then grounded out to second, but with Asselstine and Cruz on the move, Cruz landed at second base and Asselstine ended up at third base.
Matula came to the plate with two outs and a chance to tie or win the game with a hit. After Richard blazed on on the inside corner for a strike, Matula laid off the next two offerings as they missed the plate outside and then low. A nervous foul ball bounced down near the Montana dugout. The 2-Ball 2-Strike pitch.

Matula grounded a roller to Concepcion at short who threw smartly to Killibrew for the final out.

WS Oregon wins in a good one, 8-7.

GAME TWO

Surprise Ballpark was ready for the second game of the 2014 Pitchers & Catchers Report Series.

Bob Veale took the mound for the Warm Springs, Oregon team.
Tom Underwood grabbed the ball for the Warm Springs, Montana squad.
This contest would have WS Oregon playing as the home team.

WS Oregon got on the board in their first at-bat, scoring 2 runs in the First Inning. WS Montana catcher Ivan Rodriguez helped keep the damage to a minimum, catching Pete Rose off of the first base bag for a key out. WS Oregon led 2-0.

WS Montana charged into the lead in the top of the Second Inning with 3 runs on 2 hits, a Rose error and 2 walks. Underwood helped, getting wood on the ball and driving in a run himself. WS Montana was now ahead 3-2.

In the top of the Fifth Inning, Montana center fielder Rowland office drew a walk and was brought home by first baseman Eddie Murray's home run. Veale struck out Al Simmons and Rodriguez to finish the inning, but Montana had lengthened its lead to 5-2.

The bottom of the Fifth Inning had Oregon coming right back with 2 runs of their own on singles by Rose, Tony Armas and Frank White to compliment a Davey Concepcion walk. The end of the Fifth Inning rolled around with WS Montana leading 5-4.

WS Oregon opened the bottom of the Seventh Inning with a Concepcion fly out. Rose then singled cleanly to right field. First baseman Harmon Killibrew stepped to the dish and promptly added another parking lot souvenir with a long ball that put WS Oregon out in front 6-5.

WS Oregon pitcher Veale had retired 8 straight WS Montana batters since Murray's home run in the top of the Fifth Inning. Murray led off the Eighth Inning with a sharp single. Veale then set down the next three hitters on can-o-corn flyouts.

At the start of the top of the Ninth Inning Veale then coaxed another pop out from shortstop Julio Cruz and a ground ball out from Lavrell Blanks. Unerwood grabbed his bat and walked to the batter's box. Since driving in a run back in the Second Inning he had struck out in two straight at-bats. Not wanting to fall behind Veale (who had retired 13 of the last 14 Montanians he had faced), Underwood swung at the first pitch he saw and laced a grounder straight through the box and over the second base bag.

Concepcion flashed behind second base, picked the ball out of the air off of a bounce with his glove, and flipped a throw in one motion to a stretched out Killibrew. Underwood was out.

Warm Springs Montana wins Game Two 6-5.

Just like that, WS Montana led 2-0.

Finally in the Fifth Inning, WS Oregon lead-off man Lou Brock began with a single and then scored on Dave Concepcion's double. Concepcion moved over to third base on a Pete Rose ground out and then came Home with the tying run when Harmon Killibrew grounded out slowly to WS Montana second baseman, Julio Cruz. Palmer was aided by a Rose-White-Killibrew double-play in the top of the Seventh Inning.

Brock cracked a dart into the gap leading off the bottom of the Seventh Inning for WS Oregon and ended up at third base with a triple. Concepcion then skied a deep fly ball to center that allowed Brock to tag up and score on. At the end of Seven Innings, WS Oregon was out ahead 12-0.

WS Montana catcher Ivan Rodriguez grounded out to White.
