Time Travel Baseball: Exhibition Series

I wanted to get Time Travel Baseball back on the table and give it a run-through.

Time Travel Baseball was brought back into print by the efforts of Downey Games.
The game can be found here.

The game offers different levels of "complexity". Most of the additional "advanced" rules can be implemented directly from the player cards alone or in combination with a chart or two. I chose to use the Basic Rules Set and added in a handful of the Advanced Rules.

The game comes with a large set of position players and pitcher cards from different teams from different decades. Teams are drafted before each game (or series of games). A draft can be as simple as choosing the players straight away, implementing a salary cap for the team rosters, or any method in-between. I divided the players and pitchers into stacks by position and pitcher type then randomly chose players for each team.

The Time Travel Rule allows the game to be played under a simple rule set unique to of one of six different eras of baseball. The game comes with a set of managers from different teams and decades who uniquely influence both the team draft and gameplay. The game also provides a set of ballparks that can also impact gameplay.

The team lineups are below. The Cats have a total of five Hall of Famers in their batting order (although Huggins was voted in for his time as manager of the Babe Ruth led Yankees). The Dogs list only one Hall of Famer in their batting order.

Game One
The Time Travel factor = No Effect.

A handful of player/game factors favored pitching and defense.

The Dogs threatened to in the the top of the Fourth Inning when led off with a single only to be thrown out attempting to steal second base. Dave Collins belted a 2-out double but was picked off by a snap throw from Steve Carlton.

The Cats also rallied in the Fourth Inning after singles by Miller Huggins and Mickey Mantle was followed by a Walk from Roger Maris. Ted Simmons slashed a ball that was gobbled up by Trillo and turned into an inning-ending double play.

Neither team managed much offense until Huggins led off the Dogs Eighth Inning with a single. Mike Cuellar then fanned Honus Wagner for the second time. Mantle chopped a ball the squeezed through the infield and a bolting Huggins who was running on the pitch scampered around the bases to score and put the Dogs in front.

In the top of the Ninth Inning the Cats Dave Collins clubbed a ball deep to left field that was brought in on the run by a hustling Dusty Rhodes. Carlton struck out Tony Armas for the third time to end the game.

This game will feature the same lineups as Game #1. Starting pitchers have changed.

Dogs Starting Pitcher: John Hiller (Detroit 1968)
Cats Stating Pitcher:  Don Drysdale (Los Angeles 1965)

Miller Huggins continued to spark the Cats in the First Inning with a single and a stolen base and scored on a Honus Wagner double. Ted Simmons drove in Wagner to give the Cats a 2-0 lead. Dusty Rhodes and Don Drysdale smacked back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the Second Inning to push the lead out to 3-0.

The Dogs fought back in the top of the Third Inning when Manny Trillo drew a lead-off walk and scored on an Eddie Murray double.

The Cats jumped all over Dogs starter Hiller in the their half of the Third Inning. Mickey Mantle coaxed a walk, Roger Marris was hit by a pitch. Ted Simmons brought home two Yankees with a triple to deep right field. John Wokenfuss blasted a homerun to move the Cats out in front 7-1.

Chico Salmon homered in the Fourth Inning and  Tony Armas drove in a run in the Sixth Inning for the Dogs. Mantle drove in a another for the Cats in the Sixth Inning. The game ended with three straight scoreless innings and the Cats took their second win in a row, 8-3.
